--(www.USEquityNews.com)-- 05/15/2008 - Wireless Communications industry alert provided by U.S. Equity News. Satellite communication company Globalstar Inc. (NASDAQ: GSAT) said recently that it named Thomas M. Colby to its new chief operating officer position, effective May 19. Colby, 47, was named after the company's board conducted a search with a recruiting firm. Colby most recently worked as vice president and general manager of Trimble Navigation Ltd., which makes navigation and surveying devices. At Trimble, he planned, developed and launched the company's re-entry into the transportation market and managed teams that covered development, operations, marketing, finance and sales, Globalstar said.

Virgin Mobile USA Inc. (NYSE: VM) said recently it is in preliminary talks with South Korea's SK Telecom Co. about possible "strategic options," a phrase that usually suggests a buyout or major investment. Shares of Virgin Mobile rose 33 cents, or 11 percent, to close at $3.37 after initially jumping 47 percent on the news. The U.S. wireless unit of Richard Branson's Virgin Group, which went public at $15 per share last October, said the talks are in early stages and it will have no further comments until a deal is reached.

Embarq Corp. (NYSE: EQ) will hold onto its wireless customer base for the time being, but could hand it over to another carrier next year, the company's chief financial officer said Wednesday. Speaking in Washington, D.C., at an analyst conference broadcast on the Web, Gene Betts said the company would continue serving those customers until at least 2009. "After that, we may decide to transition them to a carrier," he said.
