Biotechnology company MannKind Corp. (NASDAQ: MNKD) said recently its first-quarter loss narrowed on lower research and development costs. The company lost $71.4 million, or 70 cents per share, compared with a loss of $73.1 million, or $1 per share, during the same period a year prior. Revenue rose to $20,000 from $10,000. During the most recent period, MannKind had about 28 million additional shares of common stock outstanding. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected a loss of 79 cents per share, with no revenue.

Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMLN) recently announced the initiation of a Phase 2B clinical study evaluating various dosing combinations of pramlintide, an analog of the natural hormone amylin, and recombinant human leptin (r-metHuLeptin; metreleptin) for the treatment of obesity. The objective of this dose-ranging study is to support dose selection for Phase 3, and to inform the ongoing development of a convenient delivery system for this combination regimen. The six-month, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled multi-center study will enroll approximately 600 overweight and obese subjects and is expected to complete in mid-2009.
