Oct. 4--The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the origin of a false report on a CNN citizen journalist Web site that Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs had a heart attack and was hospitalized.

The agency's enforcement unit is trying to determine whether the iReport.com posting was intended to push down the company's stock price, which fell 5.4 percent. CNN is cooperating with the SEC's probe, network spokeswoman Jennifer Martin said. It ended down $3.03, or 3 percent, to $97.07.

The stock swing caused by the erroneous report drew renewed calls for Apple to be more forthcoming about Jobs' health.

GM to close Ohio plant

General Motors Corp. said Friday it will shut down its SUV assembly plant in Moraine, Ohio, on Dec. 23 as the company shifts focus to smaller vehicles.

GM spokesman Chris Lee said employees were informed of the closing Friday. About 1,100 remaining workers are affected.

The automaker earlier this year announced plans to close the plant by the summer of 2010 or sooner, then accelerated shutdown plans as part of companywide cost-cutting moves.

GM

recently reduced operations at the factory to one shift, eliminating 400 to 500 jobs. It assembles the GMC Envoy, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Saab 9-7X.

Gas at $3.09 in Tulsa

The price of gasoline continued its sharp downturn in Tulsa on Friday, as many retailers decreased the price of a gallon of regular unleaded 6 cents to $3.09.

Only 48 hours earlier, most convenience stores were charging $3.23. A month ago, the common price was $3.55, according to AAA-Oklahoma.

Nationally, crude oil fell 9 cents to settle at $93.88 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Most analysts doubted the bailout plan would spur the market.

"I don't think it will be capable of putting a floor under oil prices," said Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates.
