Aug. 1--Workers spent Thursday afternoon removing sections of the old scoreboard in Chapman Stadium, clearing the way for a $3 million Daktronics videoboard.
The new scoreboard is part of a larger facelift totaling an estimated $22 to $24 million at the University of Tulsa's football stadium.
The overall project is on schedule for completion before the Golden Hurricane's Sept. 20 home opener against New Mexico, according to Don Tomkalski, TU director of athletic media relations.
The old scoreboard was installed by Daktronics before TU's 1993 home opener.
On Thursday, workers from Tulsa-based Claude Neon Federal Signs Inc. removed the board in sections from its steel frame behind the south end zone. The sections were airlifted and loaded on a nearby trailer by a crane operated by Bennett Steel Inc. of Sapulpa.
The new videoboard will be attached in 28 sections weighing roughly 500 pounds each. When connected, they will create what amounts to a high-definition TV screen 31 1/2 feet high and 55 1/2 feet long, according to Daktronics site supervisor Paul Winters.
It will be possible to project virtually anything on the screen that a programmer might imagine, along with advertisements, statistical
date and a video feed of the game in progress.
Daktronics, of Brookings, S.D., is the same firm handling the scoreboards and videoboards in the new BOK Center.
