Fastest Growing IPTV Service Signs Up Record Number of Subscribers While Enabling In-Home Network Expansion for Consumers
SEATTLE, WA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/06/08 -- Widevine Technologies, the only provider of
multiformat, multiplatform DRM and digital copy protection solutions, today
announced Chunghwa Telecom (NYSE: CHT) has purchased an additional 450,000
Cypher® Virtual SmartCard(TM) clients from Widevine to accommodate rapid
subscriber expansion and in-home network proliferation with existing
subscribers. The continued demand for Chunghwa's television service has
largely been driven by the introduction of existing Hollywood premium
content, HD programming and exclusive rights to Olympics coverage.
Chunghwa's interactive TV service, Multimedia on Demand (MOD), is the
largest IPTV deployment in the world based on number of devices deployed.
Customers of the Chunghwa service can take advantage of a wide range of
linear broadcast channels, video-on-demand, pay-per-view and
karaoke-on-demand.
"We are pleased to utilize Widevine's content protection to secure content
for our subscribers who continue to seek us for our exceptional service
offering," said Cheng Chin-Min Ph.D., Managing Director of Chunghwa's
Multimedia Department. "Widevine is a critical enabler of our business
model and service offerings, especially as we look to expand our footprint
to multiple consumer devices. What's more, their content protection
solutions have proven scalable to meet our highly aggressive growth
requirements leading up to the Olympics and beyond."
Widevine Cypher secures the entire Chunghwa footprint -- enabling
multimedia service delivery across multiple consumer devices within the
home.
"Widevine, working closely with Alcatel-Lucent to provide the middleware,
believes in the Chunghwa vision and
award-winning IPTV services they have offered over the last five years,"
says Brian Baker, Widevine CEO. "As we continue our global leadership in
enabling managed network operators to secure multimedia services to
multiple consumer platforms, we are confident our support of Chunghwa will
enable all 4.1M subscribers to share in the vision of exceptional TV
services into the home and beyond."
