Aug. 28--Utah liquor-control commissioners on Wednesday approved new state liquor outlets to be built in Springville and Bountiful.

The Springville store will serve southern Utah County and the Bountiful outlet will be built to replace an aging structure on the 500 West thoroughfare.

The two state-controlled stores are among 10 remodeling or building projects along the Wasatch Front and in southern Utah, adding 40 percent more retail space for wine, heavy beer and distilled spirits sales.

In all instances, local officials consented to the new stores' locations, said John Freeman, deputy director of the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

"Our desire is to be a good neighbor and to provide alcohol in a convenient and responsible manner for those who choose to consume," he said.

The Bountiful store, in the Costco parking lot at 70 S. 500 West, will close when the new outlet is completed next summer. The site at 400 N. 500 West is in a new commercial development that can accommodate five businesses.

The 10,000 square-foot store will be at the back of the development, discretely tucked away from the street frontage, liquor officials said.

Bountiful City Planner Aric Jensen said access to the existing store is so bad that customers must travel out of the business development and drive back in to get to its parking lot.

The old site, owned by the state, will be put up for sale.

In Springville, the site for a new liquor outlet is just east of Interstate 15, off Highway 75 at about 1600 North, next to the Maverik Country store. The nearly 2-acre parcel is in a commercial and industrial area bordered on the west and north by wetlands.

Currently, the nearest state liquor outlet is in Provo, at 166 S. Freedom Blvd., several miles to the north.
