CISCO Systems Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a unit of Cisco Systems Inc, has started talks with a number of local firms to implement its new conferencing system called TelePresence.

Managing director Kumaran Singaram (pic) said the new system is set to revolutionise the way organisations conduct business in Malaysia.

With large high-definition screens, built-in microphone and camera lenses, companies will be able to conduct virtual meetings at multiple locations, with multiple organisations at one time. "So far, about 12 companies, mainly those from the manufacturing and services sector, are implementing the new system and we hope to see more coming in," he said.

Talks are underway with several potential clients which include shipping line MISC Bhd and Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, the exploration arm of Petronas, to use the system.

Speaking to reporters after the official launch of Cisco Malaysia's new office, Kumaran said TelePresence helps cut the time required for critical decisions and reduces expensive business travels.

Meanwhile, Cisco Systems Asia operations president Chris Khang said the company has deployed the TelePresence system at its offices in 120 cities in 37 countries. "During the past 12 months, we estimate we have saved US$120 million (RM410 million) in travel costs," he said.

Cost for the system ranges from US$15,000 (RM51,300) to US$300,000 (RM1.03 million).

Cisco has also announced the appointment of former SAP Malaysia country manager Anne Abraham as Cisco Malaysia's new managing director, replacing Kumaran who has been promoted to a regional role in the company.
