Sep. 29--U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) announced $22 million for defense projects in southeastern Wisconsin as part of the final version of the continuing resolution appropriations bill, which was approved by the Senate.

The House of Representatives already approved these funds and the legislation now goes to President Bush for his signature.

The legislation includes:

$7.6 million for the warship motor and drive dystems developed by DRS Technologies in Milwaukee.

The DDG 1000 Permanent Magnet Motor System (PMMS) is a 36.5 megawatt propulsion motor and variable frequency drive for the next generation of surface warships. It provides the backbone for the all electric ship's integrated power system. The testing of the PMMS to date confirms that the motor will meet the Navy's needs while being smaller, lighter and more efficient than current technologies.

$2.4 million for cooling and heating of advanced tactical vehicles at Modine Manufacturing Co. in Racine.

This project will capitalize on prior technical breakthroughs for evaporator and condenser design to produce demonstrators that can be rapidly transitioned to active tactical vehicle programs. The program will use carbon dioxide instead of more traditional freon for air conditioning. This will reduce the logistics burden, protect the environment, and make it easier to repair and maintain these cooling systems. The air conditioning systems developed will also be lighter and more energy efficient, while still capable of dealing with the searing desert heat.

$2.4 million for electro-deposited coatings systems for munitions at PPG Industries in Oak Creek.

Through the use of modern commercial coating technologies, it is now possible to upgrade and modernize the coating capabilities of the munitions industrial base. These coating upgrades will enhance coating durability and resistance to corrosion, with immediate benefits to readiness during extreme weather conditions such as those on-board sea transport and in the deserts of Iraq.

$2.4 million for magnetic refrigeration technology for Naval applications at Astronautics Inc. in Milwaukee.

Conventional cooling technology, based on vapor compression systems with limited efficiency, will be too heavy and large for many of the new smaller and faster naval craft. Magnetic refrigeration is a cooling technology that offers potential for high energy efficiency, low weight, compact size, and reduced maintenance. Magnetic refrigeration is environmentally friendly, using a solid refrigerant and water-based heat transfer fluids.
