Oct. 7--The Connecticut Technology Council has released its annual list of the fastest-growing technology companies around the state, but with some new twists this year.

Formerly known as the Fast 50, the competition has been renamed the UHY LLP Tech Top 40, said CTC President and Chief Executive Officer Matthew Nemerson.

The companies being recognized have at least $3 million in revenue and some have exceeded $1 billion. "We looked at their rate of growth (in sales) over the last four years," Nemerson said.

Another change in the listing is the introduction of new categories. The winners were divided into six specialties: advanced manufacturing; energy and environmental technologies; information technology services; life sciences; new media, Internet and telecommunications; and software.

A finalist in each category, and the company with the greatest percentage of growth in revenue across all sectors will be honored at a ceremony and trade show Nov. 6 at the Chevrolet Theater in Wallingford.

"It's going to be a great example of the diversity, breadth and strength of the Connecticut economy," Nemerson said.

The UHY accounting firm is the main sponsor of the awards and the company verified contestants' financial records.

Bruce Ditman, marketing director for UHY, said the firm is growing and enjoys working with other companies that are expanding as well. "It's of top importance for us. We're extremely committed to Connecticut," Ditman said.

Thirteen companies throughout Greater New Haven made the list. In the energy and environmental technologies category were APS Technology Inc. and Sensor Switch Inc., both of Wallingford, and Basement Systems Inc. in Seymour. In information technology services, winners were Cervalis LLC in Shelton, Perimeter eSecurity in Milford and Virtera in Shelton. The life sciences honorees were CAS Medical Systems Inc. in Branford, Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc. in Cheshire, Defibtech LLC in Guilford and ZMedica Corp. in Wallingford.

Tangoe Inc. in Orange and Vbrick Systems Inc. in Wallingford were recognized in the new media, Internet and telecommunications category. The lone area winner among the software companies was Higher One in New Haven.
