Oct. 11--Gas prices are dropping everywhere, including in the Florida Keys.
But some jaws likely dropped when drivers passed the Chevron gas station on Summerland Key and the Marlin Food Store in Islamorada this week.
The sign outside the Chevron was changed Wednesday morning from $3.45 a gallon to $3.19 a gallon, making this gas the cheapest in the Keys by far. By Friday it was down to $3.16 a gallon. The same day, the Marlin was at $3.19.
At some gas stations just a few miles away on Wednesday, gas was still going for $3.70 a gallon for unleaded. By Friday, most of them had lowered their prices by as much as 20 cents per gallon.
Cindy Gay, owner of the Summerland Key Chevron, said she was able to take the price down after she get a tanker load on Wednesday from her supplier, McKenzie Petroleum.
"My goal is to be the first one to get under $3," she told the Keynoter, though cautioning that her ability to do that would depend on the market.
Oil was trading at a year low of $78 a barrel on Friday, which will most likely mean that drivers in the Keys will be paying under $3 a gallon for gas in the next few weeks.
The last time gas was selling for $3.16 a gallon in the Keys was in February. It hasn't been under $3 a gallon since 2007.
Gas prices escalated through the spring, peaking in July at more than $4.30 a gallon in Key West. They've been going back down ever since.
On Friday, gas was selling for up to $3.69 a gallon in Key West, and up to $3.65 in Marathon.
