Peres, in Acre for a scheduled Muslim-Jewish conference, said extra police would remain on the streets through the Jewish Sukkot holiday, which began at sundown Monday and ends on Oct. 21, Haaretz reported.

"Nobody wants the Muslims to be Jewish and the Jews to be Muslim, but in Israel the law must be respected," Peres said. "There is one law and one police."

An estimated 37 Arab residents and 27 Jewish residents of Acre have been arrested since riots broke out on the eve of Yom Kippur Wednesday, Haaretz reported, noting the clashes apparently were sparked by an Arab resident driving his car into a predominantly Jewish neighborhood.
