RF-7800W Radio Delivers High-Speed, Wideband Data Connections Between Commanders and Forward Operating Troops; Product Expands Capabilities of RF Communications Business
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation
(NYSE: HRS), an international communications and information technology
company, has received a series of new orders totaling $6 million from the U.S.
Department of Defense for its RF-7800W High-Capacity Line-of-Sight radio, a
new product that expands the company's leadership in tactical communications.
Harris will deliver RF-7800W radios to the U.S. Army for use in a range of
missions, including in support of Multi-National Division North Iraq.
Separately, the U.S. Marine Corps is buying an additional quantity of RF-7800W
radios as part of the Wireless Point-to-Point Link (WPPL) System, a key
element of the Marines' battlefield communications solution. These orders
represent growing acceptance of the RF-7800W radio, which provides a wireless
battlefield backbone capable of transmitting high-speed encrypted Internet
Protocol (IP) traffic in high-capacity, line-of-sight applications. The
product has already been successfully deployed by the U.S. Army's 2-25th
Stryker Brigade Combat Team, the U.S. Marine Corps, and several international
customers. In addition to military applications, the RF-7800W radio is also
being deployed to support homeland security missions in various parts of the
United States.
'The RF-7800W is proving itself as a more robust and reliable solution for
high-speed battlefield broadband connectivity than traditional microwave
systems,' said Steve Marschilok, vice president and general manager, U.S.
Department of Defense Business, Harris RF Communications. 'The radio system is
helping commanders in the field stay connected with high-bandwidth software
applications, which help them better understand the operational picture and
make more informed decisions. The radio is an important part of our plans to
expand addressable markets by anticipating the needs of new customers and
introducing superior products faster than the competition.'
The RF-7800W enables critical applications such as real-time video
transmission, situational awareness traffic, and military voice and data
exchange and is designed for network-centric operations. In point-to-point
mode under clear line-of-sight conditions, the radio can securely transfer IP
traffic over distances in excess of 50 kilometers, with data rates in excess
of 80 Mbps.
Link distances in point-to-multipoint mode can exceed 20 kilometers, and
data rates can exceed 40 Mbps, shared among all nodes. The RF-7800W provides
voice and data transmissions with very low latency and supports power-over-
Ethernet for limited cabling and easy deployment.
Harris RF Communications Division is the leading supplier of secure voice
and data communications products, systems and networks to military, government
and commercial organizations worldwide.
